Yonezawa City Uesugi Museum Special Exhibition “Sadao Tsubaki and the Artists of Soudosha”

Sadao Tsubaki, originally from Yonezawa, solidified his resolve as a painter through his encounter with Ryūsei Kishida, and they subsequently pursued the path of realism together. In 1915 (Taisho 4), Tsubaki, along with Kishida, Akira Kiyomiya, Kazumasa Nakagawa, and Kakujirō Yokobori, established the art association “Soudosha,” hosting nine exhibitions in total. Spiritually, they were closely tied to the humanitarianism of the literary magazine “Shirakaba,” which was founded in 1910. The dark tones and detailed realism characteristic of Soudosha had a significant influence on contemporary young artists.

This exhibition will introduce the activities of Sadao Tsubaki, who was passionately involved as a key member of Soudosha, as well as the connections between Tsubaki and Ryūsei Kishida and the other artists of Soudosha, highlighting how their activities impacted art during the Taisho period.
