Kuriko Mountain, Yonezawa City – “Ice Stalagmite Trekking Tour” – Let’s Go Meet the Ice Trolls
On Kuriko Mountain in Yonezawa, a winter-only ice art phenomenon known as “ice stalagmites” (hyōjun) appears, resembling the “Nyoronyoro” from Moominvalley!
These ice stalagmites grow from water droplets that fall from the ceiling of a tunnel dug in the early Meiji period at the border of Yamagata and Fukushima Prefectures. The water droplets instantly freeze and form towering ice formations—a rare and magical sight.
Some of the ice stalagmites are as large as 3 meters, creating a breathtaking spectacle!
The trekking tour takes you on snowshoes along the historic Mansei-Oji route, an old national road from 140 years ago, where local guides will explain the Meiji-era civil engineering techniques, traces of wildlife, and more. The tour provides support for those without winter mountain climbing experience, ensuring a safe and enjoyable adventure.
