
Annual Nadarayama “Kankan-watari” Snow Trekking Event – Participants Wanted!
The annual Nadarayama Kankan-watari will be held on Sunday, March 1, 2026!
“Kankan-watari” is a local dialect referring to walking across deep, hardened snow (crust snow). It is a traditional winter activity unique to the area and a beloved seasonal event.
Enjoy spectacular views of the city and surrounding mountains—everyone is welcome to join us!
Event Date
- Sunday, March 1, 2026
- Meet at 8:45 a.m.
Capacity
- Limited to 100 participants (first come, first served)
- Junior high school students and younger must be accompanied by a guardian
Participation Fee
- Adults: ¥1,000
- High school students and younger: ¥500
- (Includes insurance and a commemorative gift)
- Fee collected on the day of the event
Schedule
- 8:45 Meet & registration at Atago Community Center
- 9:15 Depart from Community Center
- 9:30 Group formation at Jizōen, then depart
- 12:15 Arrive at the summit (lunch break)
- 13:15 Begin descent
- 14:45 Return to Atago Mountain Lodge & dismissal
(Warm amazake will be served upon return)
Social Gathering
- After the trek, a social gathering will be held at the lodge
(planned menu includes grilled game meat and game soup) - Limited to 20 people (advance reservation required)
- Fee: ¥1,000 (drinks not included)
What to Bring
- Warm clothing (rainwear acceptable)
- Lunch, drinks, snacks
Recommended Gear
- Snow boots, gloves, hat, gaiters, towel, sunglasses, trekking poles
- Snowshoes or traditional snow gear (if available)
