Fantasy and Excitement — The Uesugi Picture Scroll Revived in the Modern Age
One of Yonezawa’s largest spring events, the Yonezawa Uesugi Festival, will be held from Wednesday, April 29 (national holiday) to Sunday, May 3 (national holiday), 2026.
Held in conjunction with the grand annual festivals of Uesugi Shrine and Matsugasaki Shrine, the celebration begins with the Opening Festival, featuring performances by many dancers. Other highlights include the Butei-shiki, the ceremonial departure of the Uesugi army, the Uesugi Army Procession marching through the city, and the dramatic Battle of Kawanakajima, a reenactment of the historic battle between the Uesugi and Takeda armies.
