Sōmokutō Citizens’ Lecture
“Perspectives on Memorial Practices in Japan”
To understand the philosophy behind Sōmokutō (Memorials to Plants and Trees), it is essential to consider the diverse forms of memorial practices found throughout Japan.
In this lecture, Professor Takagi will introduce various examples of these practices.
In the second half, we will present recent findings from research on the wooden memorial tablets (mokufuda) at Risshakuji Temple and discuss their cultural influence on the Okitama region.

Capacity: 70 participants (first come, first served, on-site registration)
Participation Fee: 500 yen (for materials)
Free for elementary and junior high school students.

Sōmokutō Instructor Course (Practical Session)
Date & Time: Sunday, November 23, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Venue: Okitama Cultural Center, Room 203
Capacity: 10 participants (advance registration required)
Fee: 5,000 yen (to be paid in advance)
Payment details will be provided after registration.
Open only to those who completed the beginner-level course last year.
The fee includes instructor honorarium, transportation expenses for field activities, and insurance.
