Yonezawa City Uesugi Museum Thematic Exhibit – Learn, Travel, and Enjoy the Ukiyo-e from the Hiroshige Museum of Art!

The first generation Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 ~ 1858) was an ukiyo-e woodblock print artist whose repertoire covers a wide variety of subjects, and his best known works among them are “The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido” and “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo”. His works were famous among his contemporaries and remain so to this day.

Through the beloved works of five generations of Hiroshiges from the Hiroshige Museum of Art in Tendo city, this exhibit will teach viewers how to appreciate ukiyo-e and the key focal points of a print as you travel from sight to sight along the Tokaido. In collaboration, the Uesugi Museum’s very own collection of warrior prints will also be on display for the duration of this exhibition.

Enjoy a look at the ukiyo-e of the late-Edo leading up to the Meiji period!
